1 New York Street is just off Piccadilly Gardens in the city centre, a prime location.

"Denton Corker Marshall has won planning permission for a new office building in Manchester for Bruntwood Limited.
Located at the strategic Mosley Street / York Street junction, the project comprises 10,000 sq m
of office space over 12 upper floor levels with an active ground floor retail space. The development acts as a landmark
gateway to the Mosley Street corridor and Bruntwood’s evolving New York Street project."

    Visited with Bigjobs.

Originally, there was just a tower crane on site. With its central location I really wanted to do it,
but security measures were enough to convince me to leave it...until now.
Lucky timing meant an opportunity presented itself. It's now or never..and we were in.
Saving the high-fives until we got out unscathed, we nervously headed upstairs through the concrete shell.

A quick glance from outside made it look as if the core had been built around the crane,
but closer inspection revealed that the crane had actually been removed and just two sections were bolted
to the top of the 13 storey core.

Many ladders later we were at the base of the smallest tower crane ever!

Up on the jib, I watched Bigjobs at the end swinging from side to side in the wind and I was scared :D
Even harnessed and clipped on, it felt terrifying as the wind gusted up to 26mph.

Then it started to rain. We retired to the surprisingly roomy cab until it stopped. Awesome views and nice and dry.
Everything on, but we didn't touch a thing.. though Bigjobs *really* wanted to play with the switches.
Learned that crane drivers operate at up to 45mph wind!

We saw, from the driver's display screen, that the crane swayed 2% on the vertical..
information which Bigobs withheld from me until we got back on solid ground :)

This photo shows a swing to the left

Looking North: Hilton, Town Hall, Arndale, CIS, Pall Mall (tallest crane in town)

Looking South: City Tower and Ramada Hotel to the left

Fantastic night, doesn't get much better than this.

    It's a long way down

    Looking out to jib

    And out to counterweight

    Landmarks: -

    Operator's reading material
    [IMG]

Looking down while sitting in operator's seat in the cab
    [IMG]

    The screen from the cab
    [IMG]
7.9 is how far the hook is out on the boom.
I think 2.5 is the hight of the boom and 40m is the length of hook cable and 6t is max weight
the 0 kmh is the wind speed, the 2.9 % is the amount the crane is swaying.

Alley, taking a shot out the back of the cab

And finally Alley, on top of the world

(oh, and thanks to sheep for the info about the screen :) )
