I work in mental health and having studied psychology for work where I discovered a branch called phenomenology.

Phenomenology is all about the rich description of experience, extracting people's meaning making from their discourse. It does this using several key concepts such as termporality; the relationship between person and time, spatiality; the relationship between person and space/ place, embodiment; the experience of being in a place and intersubjectivity; the relationships between people.

Phenomenology also utilises the epoche, or being wholly part of the experience.

These ideas may sound rather out there but I think they can be applied well to the experience of Urban Exploring.

In short, do you think there is a deeper meaning to this thing of ours, or is it just get pictures and get out?

for me when I explore its almost a state of being in the moment , feeling the history and almost beein able to feel exactly what went on there its a culmination of the things left behind , the age the smells .

Seems there are mixed opinions on this! Ha ha. I think there is definitely an indescribable feeling you experience when on an explore, particularly if you are exploring alone. Also, I am by no means a hippie ;-)

I probably experience phenomenology more when I'm taking wildlife images. Just spent 2 hours watching about 300 frogs mate and produce spawn (I can send you the frog porn images ;)). There are sometimes I do get engrossed and try to become part of the environment, today was stunning for me, the sounds of the frogs, sitting still long enough to allow a heron to come and spoil the orgy for some of the unlucky frogs.

For me exploring isn't just in and out take a few photos, but probably get a greater interaction with a wildlife subject if that makes sense :D

I like how the same concepts have been applied to a different approach. I think it can apply to any experience in life that you are properly immersed in at the time.

I enjoy seeing how nature takes back everything we create. I can't really describe what that does for me, humbling is probably the best way of describing it.

I'm also really nosey and like sticking my nose in places it isn't supposed to be.
