After Lieut-Col William Winterbottom died in 1924, his estate was put up for sale and the Hall and grounds were purchased by Nottingham Corporation, and the Hall converted to a hospital for mental defectives. The first patients were admitted in 1926 once many of the villas had been built. In 1956 a large extension was built at the hospital.

Life continued at the hospital until 1998 when local health authority decided to close the hospital as many of the patients had been moved out. This faced much local opposition due to losing the newly built hydrotherapy pool as there were no others in the surronding region.
