Initially planned in 1909, construction started in 1913, and then stopped during the 1st World War. The AVUS (Automobil-Verkehrs- und Übungsstraße / 'Automobile traffic and training road') racetrack opened in 1921. It was essentially two 5 mile straight roads with a hairpin corner at each end.

In 1926 it was used for the first German Grand Prix. The following year it was resurfaced and used as an experimental test track for rocket cars. Fritz von Opel set a speed record of 148 mph in an Opel RAK2:

In 1936 it was used for several athletic events in the Summer Olympics.

This was also the road that connected West Berlin to West Germany during the cold war.

After the reunification of Germnay, closing the road for race events became a bigger rpoblem, die to environmental and traffic issues.

The last real races were in 1998, with a one-off special event in 1999.

Today it is just part of the B115 road.
