B&Q was founded In the year that the man landed on the moon and they opened there first store in an old cinema in Southampton. Four decades on and they are the largest home improvement retailer in Europe. In the 1960s DIY was a hobby of the few. Professional building supplies were mainly found at builder's merchants and the service in these large stores could be intimidating to the average DIY'er. Block and Quayle wanted to bring value, longer opening hours and a broader product range to everyone, so they opened the first B&Q store in Portswood Road, Southampton, Hampshire in a disused cinema. Although initially called Block and Quayle, the name was soon shortened to B&Q.

B&Q's list of stores continued to expand throughout the 1970s, and B&Q introduced products from power tools through to sheet boarding and Formica to the British public. Richard Block left the company in 1976, but David Quayle stayed on to take the company into the next decade. By 1979 there were 26 B&Q stores.

B&Q grew rapidly during the early 1980s, buying the Scottish DIY chain Dodge City and eventually becoming part of the Kingfisher Group. David Quayle left the company in 1982, and by the end of the decade B&Q had expanded to 280 stores and was offering customers larger stores and an even greater product range, sourced from around the world.

The 1990s were an exciting time for B&Q. In 1995, the first larger format B&Q Warehouse store opened and B&Q began opening for business on Sundays. In January 1996 B&Q's first store outside the UK was opened in Taiwan.

In 1998 B&Q merged with France's leading DIY retailer, Castorama, to become the largest DIY retailer in Europe. International expansion continued in June 1999 with the opening of a Shanghai store through parent company Kingfisher - B&Q's first in mainland China.

SInce then B&Q has gone from strength to strength. However in 2015 Kingfisher, the owner of DIY chains B&Q and Screwfix, is to close about 60 stores including the Stechford branch in Birmingham.

Having been a customer of B&Q at Stechford previously I thought it was worth a quick nosey on up there to see the store in it's now abandoned state.

For many months security services had been prevalent onsite however they now have seemed to have disappeared offsite. Access is still an issue to the main parts of the building but so far these are the report photos I have managed to take.

Unfortunately on the day these where taken I only had access to my iPhone as I was simply passing at the time. I had taken photos of all that I could. Whilst this probably wasn't the most exciting explore I have done it was still interesting never the less. Hope you like them :)

    Peace,

    Convicted Vapour

To be fair the report is sound but the outside of an old B&Q isn't really of any interest I'm afraid.

Now this is something you really could have done with getting inside i would have thought.it is formatted correctly as reports go but externals don't really cut the mustard

Taught my missus to drive on that car park. She hit several kerbs, two bollards and a lamp post.

Warning for anyone going, watch where you leave your car. I live a few minutes walk away but park my car 4 miles away.

Wise move watermarking that grid shot, it'll probably end up in the daily mail at some point ;)

Seriously though, you really do need internals, otherwise its nothing more than a walk around a carpark, and its certainly not report worthy.

Although at least you bothered with a write-up..which is more than some manage

It is good that you put the effort in and can't knock you for the history - because it has been well researched. However; without any internal shots, any aerial views, anything left behind or anything overly unique about this site coupled with the fact that no real risks appear to have been taken to enter the premises, it leaves us with nothing other than a fairly bland set of images of what appears to be a stroll in a car park - Many apologies if I sound a little blunt. Next time take some risks, try and enter, be inventive and have fun doing it - That is what exploring is all about. :thumb

Haw! Haw! no offense taken to any of your comments. I understand fully that it's pretty bland and boring. Was just passing by and unfortunately no way in to do internals otherwise I would have!

Don't worry I won't be begging for a new forum car parking section. Let's face it that would be yawn! :yawn

My next reports of course will be internals with more risk because lets face it the most risk I was under was tripping in a car park pot hole or curb! Injurylawyers4u TV ads springs to mind lol ;)

Thanks for your constructive criticism as it is both helpful and appreciated! Cheers folks :thumb
