My first report on a site here, so I hope this reads through ok!

There are a tonne of reports on Barrow Gurney with lots of information, but here's some basic information of some of the history:

Barrow Gurney was built In the 1930’s to help relieve the overcrowding of an existing Mental Hospital at another site in Stapleton, Bristol. Not long after opening in the late 1930’s, it was used by the Rayal Navy during the war until 1946.

Technically it was classed as an asylum, and then a mental hospital but both references were dropped and it was referred to only as Barrow Gurney.... but anyone in the Bristol or surrounding area would call it (and still do) an asylum or mental hospital. The buildings were designed to take a little under 500 patients, and the design was very modular, with very long straight corridors with rooms either side. In fact, walking around the remains, it’s very apparent that you could have been in any room in any of the buildings and really not know where you were on the site!

In 2003 it was announced that the hospital would be closed by 2008, and by 2004 only 2 units remained open. In 2005 a survey of the hospital found it to be the dirtiest in Britain and it closed the remaining buildings the following year.

I remember visiting a patient there back in 1999, this is the first time I have been there since.... and not surprisingly it's a little different now! Demolition is well and truly in full swing and a lot of the site looks is just piles of bricks, steel and burnt wood, even when I got there there were fires still smouldering.

I went to 2 parts of the site, the main building at the entrance which I believe (don't quote me on this) cannot be demolished as there are currently bats living in the roofspaces. Although pretty wrecked, this is the most intact part left on the site.

The other area I went to was part of the buildings in the main demolition area. There aren't really any clues left to which buildings served which purpose but in particular was one building which I know was the mother and baby unit.

Anyway, here's a few images from the visit, including a few pieces of graffiti which I found quite interesting.

There are a couple of changes you need to make to the report:

1.) Need to add some history to the report (even though its a well traveled site).
2.) Pictures could do with being a tad bigger.

Aside from this not a bad report with some decent shots :thumb

Thanks for the tips, I'll make some changes. Not sure why the images have displayed so small..... I'll look at it now.

    3) It's Barrow Hospital not Barrow Gurney ;)

The main block is the photos you've taken where its pretty much a gutted shell. The larger 3 story building near the entrance was the nurses accommodation and canteen :)

Good to see an update, can't believe its still not been completely demo'd

yes, it's pretty gutted in what's left at the demolition area. I think the entrance you're referring to was/is the Woodland House building?

Here's a map of the place, I've updated it going on your pictures to reflect what's left - grey demo'd, black still standing, red burnt out

She's still holding on! I wander if this demo team will be more organised/professional than the last however many? Doubt it, but time will tell.

Not much of a difference really :D

Still looks like cowboy demolition limited to me. At least they removed the asbestos this time around.

Whilst bats are still observed buildings must stay, however if nothing is found after roosting season the demo will carry on,
I'd rather view in next few weeks whilst there is great daylight in early evening, than wait to September ,
I'm still looking to join up with people if anyone interested

I was there Monday and spoke to a site worker. They said the last two major buildings were being demolished in two weeks (nurses house and mother and baby unit). There is very little left of the other buildings.
