I've been through a few active railway tunnels and it's a bit addictive.
Is there anything interesting in Box railway tunnel? Links to mines, sidings connecting to MOD things?

I'm a bit wary of this one since the northern end has the tunnel quarry connection. Are there extra risks of being detected with this in place?

I think your idea would be very silly and not very wise. But I can give you info

Anyways here's an old report of mine of that tunnel quarry connection you referred to. Please read and take note of the last post, it says that shiny new palisade fencing now blocks the tunnel quarry portal and it says that armed police turned up when a railworker was caught in there. You would be screwed many times over if caught.

    Take care.

Is this one with the side tunnel that leads somewhere?

Remember the trespassing on a live railway might end up with a criminal prosecution and you getting bummed

Not to mention, dead. Having walked through Sapperton tunnel many times as a British Rail employee I'd say a "live" tunnel has to be treated with respect.

Yes, I'm fully aware of all the implications of a live tunnel. I do my research and planning very carefully regarding access, times and clearance. Yes, I read that report a few days ago. I have no plan to go down tunnel quarry. I just want to know if, say, someone was to walk down the regular tunnel is there any extra risk of being detected relative to a tunnel elsewhere?

Tbh, you'll be doing some of us a favour by keeping well away from the eastern tunnel portal, and you'll be doing yourself a massive favour by not walking through a live railway tunnel ffs

There is nothing worth noting inside Box Tunnel itself aside from an old shunt signal (which has probably been removed since the formation was lowered a few months back).

The tunnel is active all day round, remember freight can run as often at night as passenger services can during the day. The BTP have better things to do than chase you around. They are understaffed and under budgeted, the last thing they need to do is take officers off the beat because a train driver has reported someone trackside. Worst case that call to them could be letting them know he's had a one under and needs someone to come scoop you up.

Don't forget, with the current electrification work (the bulk of which is at night) it is highly likely the area will be crawling with Network Rail staff, at the very least you can expect to see infrastructure trains which often don't show up on timetables...therefore the first you may know of it will be when you're halfway through the tunnel running for a refuge.

No. The tunnel portal is external. There was one interesting thing in Box Tunnel that we missed though... 'The Lake'.

Two of my housemates are rope access guys and they've done a lot of work de-vegging the section of line that hosts box tunnel over the last year. They have had frequent contact with both the btp and the mod squad, both parties regularly inspect the portals and note the registrations of any cars parked in the area.
