    Broadfield Station

Another disused station on the ELR, and by far the worst one yet. I walked from Bury to Heywood along the tracks with high hopes for a full 40 minutes, to be greeted with this.
Broadfield railway station served the district of Broadfield in Heywood in Greater Manchester, England from 1869 until 1970. The line through the station has since been reopened by the East Lancashire Railway, however the site of the station and the goods yard has been covered by a warehouse and a housing estate.

The station in 1963 - I had high hopes when I saw this picture. The goods yard and sidings can be seen in the background of the picture, beyond the platform.

As I approached the site, I came across this bridge - at this point I assumed it would be similar to the Knowsley Street station layout...they both had very similar layouts by the looks of it.

However, I then spotted a small stone slab poking out between some brambles. This is all that remains of Broadfield station, and I'd walked for 40 minutes to find it.

Another "platform" sits on the other side of the track.

And of course, the classic 'No Trespassing' sign. If you ask me, it's not worth the effort :turd

So there we are, another ELR station ticked off the list. It'll be worth it once I can say I've done the whole lot...I hope. Broadfield is the only disued station on the Bury to Heywood line, so I suppose I can say I've completed that!

Aching legs, an 80-minute walk in total, and not even a platform I can stand on. Screw you Broadfield.

Looking at it there appears to be more left of that station than Ewood bridge up near Edenfield, I called up recently to see what remains of both there and also the junction and station at Stubbins where the Corner Pin pub is situated, unfortunately not very much!

Ewood Bridge just has the one platform, but it's in "better" condition...hmmm...
Stubbins isn't too bad though, both platforms still remaining and the steps down to the subway :D

Thanks for the trip. You should have carried on up the line towards Castleton and gone to the Phoenix Brewery for a pint of Wobbly Bob!

I would have loved to haha, my legs just couldn't take me any further, especially with the journey back!
    Castleton does look interesting though...;)
