I wanted to go look at this the other weekend but the car broke down and i never got there. I take it they are stripping the modern part rather then the old as didnt think there was much left in there production wise? What does the old stable block look like atm? Looked interesting that did!

If you get in make sure you visit the infamous underground lake, rumour has it they put a cruise liner down there in the 60's to give the employees something to do while the beer was brewing...

I was chatting about this with some friends earlier (cue lengthy discussion on underground Liverpool) and one of them managed to dig this up, you're after page 32.

I DIVED THE CAINS MYSTERY LAKE

Following our recent articles on Cains mystery lake, Mersey Ale was contacted by Pete Whatman with news that in 1995 he had dived to the bottom of the lake!

Pete, a professional diver, had been approached by Steve Holt of Cains to investigate the lake. Rumours had it that Cain s workers had used a boat as the lake was so extensive. Steve was planning to establish a visitor Centre at the brewery and was keen to display the boat and video footage of the lake. There had been tales of coffins being washed down from St James's Cemetery and found floating on the lake.

As recounted in Paul Wilson's article on the lake, the first problem was access. A very narrow pipe led down to the lake chamber, at which point the wooden ladders had decayed leaving a 70 foot drop to the surface of the water. This was bridged with caving ladders and the use of abseiling techniques drawn from Pete's experience as Director of the Leader Outdoor Pursuits Centre. The large lake cavern was man made hewn from the surrounding sandstone. Indeed carved letters dated 1864 were found on the rock (see photo). Does any reader know what the letters refer to?

The most heart stopping moment of the descent occurred when the emergency gas detector sounded! Pete had not had not been told that this model sounded periodically to confirm it was working. Having recovered from this shock, then came another heart stopper as a brown hand appeared on the surface of the water! Shades of coffins floating on the lake? Well no. It proved to be a brown rubber glove dropped years earlier by brewery workers, which had filled with air and floated on the surface. Panic over!

This reconnaissance was followed by two dives using an inflatable dinghy as a platform. The dives revealed the lake to be 40 foot deep, crystal clear, with the bottom inexplicably covered in small pebbles. Where had these come from when the cavern was solid sandstone? Another mystery! A further surprise was the discovery of two underwater tunnels leading off the lake, one heading under the reception area and containing pumping equipment, the other heading up Stanhope Street towards the cemetery, both coming to an abrupt dead end after about 50 yards. What were these used for?

Unfortunately there was no sign of a boat. Indeed it would have been a major headache to find a way of raising it to the surface through the narrow access.

We would like to thank Pete Whatman and Paul Wilson for their valued contributions. Further information on Cains Mystery Lake would be welcomed.

Interesting stuff. Sounds a bit like an artesian well but bigger. Someone really needs to get in here. It's ripe for it.

It's being used to store cars at the moment, so expect many alarms and men with dogs.

Not in the old brewery tho? The cars were there when i was there in Jan and we just wandered around it in front of the CCTV looking for an easy way in. No one on site, No one showed either. Unless you've had first hand experience?
