Another repost of one with links eaten by Flickr.

This one's my awesomest experience so far.

A combination of abandoned castle dating back to 1882, and sanatorium, connected by underground tunnels, in the middle of a working hospital. We drove there after bumping around for an insane amount of time, lost in the utterly mystifying labyrinth of highways surrounding Paris, and after failing to get into an old alcohol distillery (partly as a result of the fact that it wasn't nearly as abandoned as we'd hoped).

I've only found 2-3 other sites with pictures of the place. Unfortunately the spectacular-looking theater was totally bricked up, there was no way in even through the subterranean passageways.

The hospital building is trashed, but the main chateau is in fair shape; I get the impression that the guy who took a sledgehammer to one of the underground cinderblock walls to make a passage only did so recently. Thank you, good sir.

I've rarely been so spooked as during this visit; it was pitch black inside due to the windows on some floors being covered over; the storm outside banged shutters open and closed, and rustled through stacks of x-rays and papers thrown on the floor, and we were paranoid about being spotted by the hospital staff or the cars regularly passing by outside.

The castle is gorgeous, and it's a unique feeling, having a grand ballroom and majestic staircase to yourself. Unfortunately, it's badly gone to seed, although you can easily see evidence of its former grandeur.

Oh, and we found a morgue. Whee.

Here are some pics; full set is at kosmograd dot net as always.

    Gauges!

Boy, it's been derelict for a while:

    The not-so-grand staircase:

    What's behind door #1?

Dead people, obviously. "But where are the bodies?"

    PROBABLY IN...ZE KITCHEN!

    Yeah, so's yermom:

    The grand staircase:

No roaring fire to welcome us

The castle from the outside, sans tripod (note to self: I really need a fast wide-angle lens...)

Someday, son, all this will be yours.

    Ohai thar.
