    Product Description
    `Cold War Bunkers' is the third volume in a series of high-quality photographic records of Britain's underground heritage. Other volumes in the series cover the wide range of underground structures built during an in preparation for the Second World War, and also the surviving relics of the world-famous subterranean stone quarries of the Bath and Corsham areas of the West of England.
    Each of the large-format volumes contains approximately 400 colour and B&W archive photographs accompanied by comprehensive captions, an authoritative text and supporting maps, plans and diagrams.
    In many instances Nick Catford has been granted unprecedented access to many highly sensitive sites in order to compile the collection of photographs reproduced in this book.

    From the Publisher
    `Cold War Bunkers' is a comprehensive photographic overview of all the underground, semi-underground and surface-built cold-war atomic and nuclear bunkers built in the British Isles to protect central, regional and local government, military organizations, the Civil Defence organization, the Royal Observer Corps, UKWMO and the public utilities against nuclear attack by the Soviet Union between 1946 and 1989.
    Amongst the sites represented in this volume are:
    The Corsham Central Government War Headquarters (Burlington);
    The London Rotundas;
    The Regional War Rooms built during the early 1950s and the network of Civil Defence bunkers that supported them;
    The Regional Seats of Government (RSGs) of the 1960s, the SRHQs that were built at the end of that decade and into the 1970s, and the highly sophisticated and hugely expensive Regional Government Headquarters of the 1980s.
    Also covered are the huge range of ROC bunkers from the very large Sector Controls to the tiny 3-man observation posts; the often complex and sometimes Spartan County and District council bunkers, bunkers built by the water companies, and the deep underground emergency telephone exchanges built by the GPO and BT.
    The book also goes in great detail into the underground radar control rooms established as part of the RAF's `Rotor' radar system and also the hardened anti-aircraft gun control rooms which were integrated with `Rotor' in the early 1950s.
    Considerable coverage is also given to the cruise missile sites at Greenham Common, specialist hardened structures at RAF Alconbury and elsewhere, along with many other sites and structures too numerous to mention.

    Hi... for my sins, I'm Nick McCamley and I'm a director of the publishing firm that is publishing Nick Catford's absolutely brilliant book. When we first planned the book it was going to have 192 pages but we've upped this to 224 pages on account of the quality of the photo's.... we're also printing it on a much heavier weight of paper in orderr to produce a really top-quality volume. The downside is is taking a little longer than we hoped and it will be released about a month late, on the 20th October. Some stunning pictures of the Burlington complex are included.

    Hi Nick. Great introduction - though as the author of the "Bible" you're a little self-effacing :thumb

    Thanks for letting us know about the new book. Secret Underground Cities was an inspirational text; in recent years, as we learned more about Spring Quarry, it seemed as though a final chapter was needed.

    Hi... in reply to VWDirtboy: no, I'm not Pen & Sword; they published all my earlier books (Secret Underground Cities, Disasters Underground, Cold War Secret Nuclear Bunkers etc, but I haven't done anything with them for a few years. To be honest, I think they're a bit stuffy and old fashioned in their style and attitude to their authors.
    A year ago we set up our own publishing company, Folly Books Ltd, to publish the sort of books we'd like to see. So... we're doing Nick Catford's book, which will be out in October, and my new one Second World War Secret Bunkers, (ISBN 9780956440532) which should be out around 20th September.

    Re Urbanity's comment: yep, an update to the Spring Quarry section of Secret Underground Cities has been much needed. Of course, when I wrote the book twelve years ago there was much that I couldn't say about Corsham - the whole manuscript, in fact, had to be submitted to the Government 'D' Notice Committee for vetting.

    The new book Second World War Secret Bunkers, is really to make up for all this; it's essentially Secret Underground Cities on steroids. We've put just about everthing into this book - hundreds of photo's, original maps, plans and engineers drawings - archive and modern photos. Pages and pages of stunning photo's of the Spring Quarry factory, Tunnel Quarry, Westwood, etc - lots of previously unpublished Monkton Farleigh and Farleigh Down stuff, along with some almost unbelievable photographs of a truly breathtaking location that no-one else, as far as I know, has ever seen. Loads more too.... 224 pages, full colour, large format... should be available around 20th September. I'll post a sparate entry about this book in this section a little later.
