Lead or Rumour info - Concrete plugs, Manchester -- what are they?

    Manchester. There are two odd-looking concrete things that look like plugs, in the ground just by the junction of Upper Brook Street and Grosvenor Street.

    looks like they have normal square covers built into them - Do they have any markings?

    Have a simular one not far from me that is level with ground which opens up into a main sewer.

    They are capped shaft entrances to the old tunnels that run from Grosvenor St to Downing St, there is a large underground cavern there, once used to store water for the long demolished brewery and printworks

    Basically there is a network of tunnels and shafts including an old well deep beneath that entire area, there is no oxygen down there as none of it is vented
