Cookridge Hospital specialised in the treatment of cancer but these facilities were transferred to the new St James's Oncology Unit of Leeds Teaching Hospital. The main building and the lodge, designed by Norman Shaw in 1868, are Grade II listed. In 1888 after a £6,000 donation from John Ward a convalescent home in memory of his daughter Ida was opened on the site.

In 2008 the hospital closed. Much has now been demolished and I well and truly missed the boat with this place. A few years back it looked great.

Around a month before this trip I'd made a flying visit and all I really achieved was to set off the crackling PIR speakers. A few weeks later and Leeds explorer was good enough to meet up with us. I was kicking myself at the ease of access I’d missed previously, but a couple of minutes beyond the fence and shazam! We were in.

Thanks to LeedsExplorer. It was good to meet you mate.

The IDA ward of Cookridge hospital; a lovely relaxed place, the paint peeling and refusing to hug the walls any longer. A modest site but a winner for a nice Friday afternoon.
