The Coulsdon bunker was built at the start of WW2 as a large public air raid shelter for the local population against Nazi air raids. It is one of four which were proposed and built in similar construction and lay out by Surrey Council at the beginning of WW2 (the others being at Epsom Downs, Ashley Road in Epsom and Kenley). After the war, the shelter was used by an optical manufacturing company and later as a garage.
