Crail Aerodrome started life as a naval air station at the end of the First World War when planes became increasingly important and efficient in reconaissance missions and attacks in modern warfare. However shortly after the armistice it was demolished, and by 1919 everything was gone.

In the runup to the Second World War, construction work started again in September 1939 and it was to become HMS Jackdaw, a Royal Naval Air Station. Although its main role was Torpedo Bomber training, planes from the airbase actually took part in the final attack on the Tirpitz in 1944. it was one of the Navy’s busiest airfields throughout the War.

Renamed HMS Bruce and designated an Air Apprentice School until 1949, it later became the “Joint Services Foreign Language School”. Founded in 1951 by the British armed services to provide language training, principally in Russian, and largely to selected conscripts undergoing National Service was based at the airfield. The school closed with the ending of conscription in 1960.

Today it is used as a pig shed, a sheep farm, storage for the local farmes and some light manufacturing industries. The former runway is now used as a karting track and holds carbooth sales once a month.
The control tower towards the sea remains abandoned.
