    History
Site had been open for 150 years, changing hands multiple times. Site was formly a Uniquema factory, but was then acquired by Croda in 2006. Croda is a global manufacturer of specialty and oleochemical products, which are chemicals derived from plans and animal fats. Their products are supplied to various industries; crop care, lubricant additives, oilfield, and textiles.

The site was 30 acres, with about 250,000 sq ft of warehousing, offices and laboratory accommodation. Much has been demolished now, but a fair few diverse buildings remain. Part of the site is still in use, signs indicate the company may be Hydrock. The production units processed up to 125,000 tonnes of natural oils and fats to produce fatty acids, glycerine and a range of esters.

Closed in 2009, taking 115 jobs with it. Croda's turnover in 2008 was £45 million, with £2.1 million profit.

    The explore
Gained access relatively easily, and moved around the inside of the buildings. There are builders on site on one side of the site, so we didn't get many exterior shots (this time!). Asbestos everywhere in one of the older buildings. Lots of cool stuff, including a water cooling tower fan! At one point someone drove down the middle of the site on a scooter on a hi-viz jacket, he appeared to be standing up and peering through the windows so we were a little more cautious after this. We also thought we heard quiet footfalls in the room behind us right after the scooter guy, so we darted into a room and waited 10 minutes. Could have just been us being jumpy....but we went around a lot of the site and got out without being spotted. A great few hours :)

The beautiful collections of chemistry books left unattended in one of the offices upset me greatly. Really wish they would have re-homed them :(

We didn't go into that building as it was in a direct line of site with the entrance/the road where we saw the guy on the bike going up and down. Next time I am over I think I will give it a go though......whenever that may be.... ;)
