    Bailey Mill - Delph - Oldham - 6th June 2010

This mill, for me, was personal, it has defeated me on two occasions. It's a grand building especially with all of the machinery in the basement, paperwork in the offices and the hundreds of spun cotton reels in genuine wicker baskets.

It's amazing how it has survived relatively untouched. The last time that I was here I was put off by 'Workers' removing slates from the roof. The time before access needed a torch and none was available. This time, everything fell into place just nicely.

I've only noticed one item of machinery missing from the last report, although there is still plenty to see, as I hope this report will show.

As far as I am aware, the building has been closed since '96 or '99, but their website is still hosted live.

    The History

Very brief really. Information is scarce but the building began production as a cotton weaving mill in the late 19th century and ceased production just before the millenium. I understand that the mill providing work for many local people and there are proposals to transform into apartments or simply demolish.

On the first floor, there is a machine which glowed with power, now lying dead and defunct, it seemed sad to find such an item of industry left to snooze forever.

    Into The Basement...

The basement for me was the highlight, imagine the smell of industry, oil, muskiness and the untouched machinery was fantastic. It was pitch black so had to be light painted.
