Here it is again, everyone's favourite hospital.

I've been toying with the idea of seeing this place for a while, only because I know it's an easy one to tick off the list. I knew this place was trashed but I didn't know it was this bad, I've never seen anything like it. Considering how big this place is, I can't believe every single room has smashed windows, holes in walls and a lot of piss poor graffiti everywhere. It's my own fault for not going sooner to see it in a better state, but there are a few bits that make for some good photos.

    History:

Derbyshire Royal Infirmary (DRI) was established in 1810 on land formerly part of Derby's Castlefield estate on land near what is now Bradshaw Way and the A6 London Road. It was known as the Derbyshire General Infirmary at the time. In 1890 a Typhoid outbreak sweeped through the hospital, and the buildings design was blamed. The hospital is entirely demolished, a year later Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone of what would become Derbyshire Royal Infirmary. The neo-Jacobean building was completed in 1894, and its main features were its 'Onion' shaped domed towers and its central corridor which ran the length of the hospital.
The hospital was expanded at several points in the 20th century, the most visible being the still used Wilderslowe Tower and the now disused A+E building built in 1970. The DRI as a result is an architectural mish-mash with the original hospital at its heart.
Buildings aside, the DRI was a pioneering hospital, the UK's first Flying Squad was set up here in 1955, in 1976 George Cohrane set up the first National Demonstration Centre for Rehabilitation and in 1992 the Pulvertaft Hand Centre was opened by the Queen, her grandson William was sent here seven years later following a rugby injury.
In the late 90s, the NHS Trust's for each hospital in Derby merged, and drew up a dramatic plan to consolidate the services of both hospital's on one site. The so called 'super hospital', soon to be known as the Derby Royal Hospital is one of the largest in the region. There are no official plans to redevelop the now redundant Derbyshire Royal Infirmary, the land is covered by a large regeneration plan which will expand Derby's city centre southwards into what is known as Castleward. The 1987 built part of the hospital shall continue to provide medical care, providing the services of the closed Aston Hall and Grove Hospital's south of Derby.

As always this was made all the better by some excellent company in the form of jacquesj, Miz Firestorm, DirtyJigsaw and 3 non-members. Had a near miss with a group of about 10 chavs trying to get into the towerblock just as we were on our way out, they forced their way in but lucky for us it was not the same way we got in, a real heart in mouth moment for a few minutes. I was expecting to see other groups in there but we never crossed paths with anyone else, a very relaxing stroll (except for the chavs).

Apologies if my photos are a bit more focussed on the graffiti but I thought I'd try get some different photos to the norm and try focus less on all the damage.

    Nice shots mate.

Personally I find "new/cleaner/non-trashed" hospitals a bit of a yawn, spend enough time in that atmosphere as it is with my job. The more trashed the better if you ask me. Although that means I can't sound all cool on line and say stuff like "The old girls gone down hill since I visited" etc etc :)

I liked this place and it looks like you had a good time too. Thumbs.

Each to their own I guess, it was an enjoyable explore but I just found it hard to be inspired by all the damage

Liking this mate, sad to hear it's gone so downhill although I spose that was to be expected once it hit the papers. That graff's really cool, pretty sure it's all by the same Sheffield artist who goes by the name Colorarti. Those rooftop shots are rather peachy too :thumb

I'll be going round here next week sometime as part of my job. I've been told that they have or they're going to concrete the stairs in the nurses tower to stop people getting to the roof.
