Hi, Does anyone know about the (somewhat military base) off chapel lane (just off the A674 nr botany bay). Ive known about it for years. A freind showed me it. as you follow Chapel ln it will come to a sharp right hand bend, Its here you will see a barrier to the left with a 'for sale' sign next to it. Now years ago i went down this road it comes to a massive electric gate (which i couldnt go through) beyond the gate was a windy road leading up to 2 big doors surrounded in heavy concrete built into the hillside. I came back out and turned left down the small road on the sharp bend and there was several out buildings and another small complex to the right. I took my mates kids up today and its all still there but there seems to be building going on. I cant find any info on it plus its blanked out on google maps. Ive been dying to know what it is for years.

Quick google suggests it is an ex-Royal Ordnance site, the sign with a circle is BAE Systems.

:confused I cant find where you mean from your directions. There doesn't seem to be a Chapel Lane anywhere near the A674 at Botany Bay... unless I'm missing it completely.

There's quite a few sites dotted around Chorley and surrounding areas. A couple are quite well known, others more less so.

Cheers Muttley, dunno how I missed that, cant see the wood for the trees :thumb

    Hmm, interesting looking place.
Storage facility for ROF Chorley (as was), Leggit, try google-searching for ROF Heapey mate (not to be confused with Healey Dell by the way). And on here too.

And this makes interesting (slightly tongue in cheek) reading too --> http://www.angelfire.com/mn2/Oubliette/Heapey.html

A quick look at the OS map, a little search of google reveals some sales information for the Grade II listed Wheelton House/Farmhouse which BAE systems sold off with appropriate planning permission for conversion - This being the eastern end of the site, and may account for the building work seen.
The other useful titbit is: "The site used to form part of a BAE Systems storage facility and land adjacent to the plots is still operated as such by a third party"

Still an ammo store ? could be wrong but sure it was sold off.. ?

It was a few year ago we poked about here and was soon greeted with some un-savoury types who were non too happy with our presence :D

It was, Site is now owned by Redcliffe International (Shipping) Limited who specialise in providing freight and logistics solutions for military forwarding and are BAE's Logistics partner for ammunition & explosives storage & distribution. They also do contract transport for the MoD.

Redcliffe have all the essential accreditations for the storage & movement of explosives and Section 5 of the Firearms Act 1968 for weapons & munitions. [aka not to be messed with]

This is the site we are talking about
