hi all i know these exist, but i am wondering if anyone has tired to find the entrance up langdon hole and whether it is still accessible from langdon or down at the eastern arm of the harbour?

Thanks for clearing that up, always wondered what they were and shamelessly never bothered to look them up :(

Here's an interesting image, you can see the aerial ropeway tunnel but apparently also another one that joins it from the old prison site too.

Have a quick look at this --> http://www.du.kent-history.co.uk/1/ropeway/rw3.jpg and then look at this stunning image where, if you look closely enough, you can make out the tunnel entrance, to the right of Langdon Battery, and also shadows of the ropeway stantions across the landscape --> http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn151/unfairytale208/LANGDON0001.jpg That picture is also glorious to look at with the Defence of Britain in mind (lots of trench systems plus railway guns too).
    :)

I can confirm that the twin tunnels for the coal ropeway are completely sealed at both ends. I was at School in Dover in the late 1940s and, with a school friend, we walked these tunnels. There was easy access from Langdon Hole They ended as a clear drop to the Eastern Arm. At this period the three underground barracks in Langdon Hole were also open; we went down two of them: rather spookey! All are now completely sealed.
