On my way to work this morning was blankly staring out of the train window as I do (see Dover Bunkers near railway thread), and clocked a portal entrance in the West side of the railway cutting between Dumpton Park and Broadstairs. It is approximately opposite the Hereson school, but I can't be too precise I'm afraid. It's approximately here: https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?sadd...&geocode=FUmTDwMdgNsVAA&gl=uk&mra=ls&t=m&z=17

I didn't get too good a look, so I'm not sure if it's sealed or not. I wondered if it was anything to do with the old Ramsgate Harbour line, but that was on the other side of the tracks.

Do any of the Planet Thanet crew have any ideas?

Dont think its anything to do with the ramsgate harbour line/tunnel portal mate that line is long gone, but it is more than likely a storage cut out used originally by track workers..

Couldn't get a decent picture on me phone-camera-do-whacky earlier, did manage to get a better look though.

It's a brick portal about 4-5 feet high with a wooden door over the front, some panels of which are missing, but dark on the inside, so couldn't see from the train. It's closer to Broadstairs than I thought, too. Given it's height I imagine it's probably what you said Wevs. Would be interested to see if anyone has a closer look though.

Funny that you bumped this as I've started working in Margate again and pass it daily, forgotten to lookout for it actually.

a load of the train crew were on another forum years ago which is now dead. They had a look some 5 years ago and its just a small cutout as wevs said for track workers to place their equipment and tools while working on the tracks. There used to be some mesh over it too but i believe that was pulled off when they had a look.
