Lead or Rumour info - Durham locals

    Driving through durham this morning and saw some building work. Theres an open underground structure visable from the bridge. Might just be an old cellar. I dont no.

    its in this area where the trees are.

    This is were the old ice rink or bowling alley was, went about a month ago and they was half way demo it all down, i know the land is sold most properly to a housing company.

    Ah cheers stig. The early maps show a mill stream running on that line from the weir and joining the river again around the corner. Wonder if it was filled in or culverted over.

    Ah, the one I think you might be thinking of is right next to the Premier Inn Hotel and I believe there was going to be some development a few years back on this, but there was a public car park next to it, and if I'm thinking correctly a short distance from the bridge and the Raddison Blue hotel?

    Hi,
    This looks like part of the old "race" where water was taken from the river to power the generator for the old ice rink. There was a brick/stone/concrete stucture that was quite deep as I recall.

    i believe there was a water mill there with a culvert diverting the water.....apparently they are going to reopen and use this feature in the new buildings...

    It was the intake from the river for the turbine that generated the electricity to heat and light the place and the mechanism for freezing the water to make the ice
