The Effra River used to run along what is now Effra Road, an A road in Brixton. Also known as the Brixton Storm Relief, this sewer was built during the 19th Century by the famous Sir Joseph Bazalgette, bringing the flow of the river underground. The river flows from around Herne Hill to Deptford. Explored a couple of kilometers around Effra Road, hope to go back and penetrate a bit deeper with the time and equipment. Original tunnels in two grades of brick, as well as concrete additions.

Tunnel original to system a couple of meters under the road. Quite a strong current here, taped wellingtons left me a little moist...

Frequent smaller inlets (about half a meter wide) leading onto the main tunnel.

    Junction with modern concrete addition.

Lower concrete tunnel from junction with a drop at the end.

    Thanks to Goblinmerchant for advice.
