Yes it is but its one of those "we have heard it all before" situations,we have the plans to reopen the ramsgate tunnels which is still stumbling along at snails pace due to funding after several years..it will no doubt be "securely" locked away as for the work to open it and make it a tourist spot only time will tell

    Hello folks,

I haven't posted on here for a long time - greetings.

I wrote the summary above and work for the Trust. This project is very much going ahead and we hope to open in 2015.

In the meantime I should be able to arrange access for interested parties from November - just give me as much notice as possible.

If you have any queries email southforeland@nationaltrust.org.uk FAO Jon Barker.

    Cheers

    Jon

    Jeez.

On another note, bet we could get a work part together and volunteer for a weekend.

    Cheers Steve.

OT that would be great, we cannot take any spoil from the tunnels until next summer. it will be bagged up and stored inside (to minimise the vehicular damage to the chalk grassland which has various protections). So we will have allot to shift, so any help would be appreciated.

Just drop me a note when you're ready, and we'll see what we can do.

All the best with the project, much better than it being sealed off permanently.

Sad to see it sealed, but good to know that there are plans to re-open it. Hope you keep the names on the stairs, I managed to get the very bottom one!

The securing of Fan Bay is only to do with the project - the others sites are not on the cards so please don't panic. If this ever were to occur I would look to set up an access agreement..... But it is 100% not planned or even on the agenda!

We are not sure what is going to happen to all the chalk graffiti as yet but it will all be recorded in a full archaeological survey.

Also just as an aside, the Trust does not own any of the sites in the South Foreland valley - these are owned by the parish. However I am one of the key holders and with notice could sort out a visit to these.

Won't be the same, not having to crawl through that hole on the dark, howling wind and poring rain. Not forgetting the risk of slipping on the chalk and hurtling down the shaft.
That maybe just me though :)
