    HISTORY

Fernwood was established in 1973 by Mrs Denyer. It is a nursery and pre prep taking children from 12 months to 9 years. Fernwood's in education is to combine the improvements and advantages of modern teaching methods with the proven and often abandoned qualities and principles of traditional teaching techniques.

"More than 100 children have been left not knowing what school they will attend in September after a free school plan in Bedfordshire was scrapped.

Fernwood Pre-Prep Independent School, in Aspley Heath, was granted free school status more than a year ago. But earlier this month the Department for Education (DfE) changed its mind, leaving children stranded. The DfE said it was talking to the school and sponsor. The prime minister said the issue would be examined.

The independent school, which caters for children aged 12 months to nine years, had opted to become to a free school after its current head teacher Mary Denyer said she would retire at the end of this academic year.

Free schools are state-funded schools set up by groups of parents, charities or other providers. There are about 80 already open with plans for a further 102 this year."

Fernwood closed it's doors in June 2013.

    VISIT

After seeing this place when out and about in the woods, we decided it had to be looked at closer. So off we set as soon as the darkness came. Was a bit tricky getting in, but eventually everything fell into place. Once getting inside it was clear pretty much everything had been stripped, along with most of the pipe work in the floors and walls, which made it interesting walking round with holes literally everywhere. This place was like a maze inside, with little rooms poked all over the place, I couldn't really get a lot of snaps due to the location and the use of flash. The place is pretty trashed with the usual crap graffiti and satanic messages, but still a fun mooch all the same, visited with gPub and a non-member.

Looks quite promising - it would be better to go back during the day and get some decent pics though.

UPDATED: Fernwood Nursery & Prep School, Aspley Heath, Bedfordshire - Sept 14

So i went back today to capture everything in the light of day.

I'm glad I did, as I discovered more history of the place.

"Homewood Convalescent Home was built as a school, but not used as such and was acquired by Bedford County Hospital in 1919 and used during the summer as a convalescent home. During the Second World War it was used as a sick bay for evacuated children. It could accommodate 20 people. It was sold by the Ministry of Health in 1973 and is now Fernwood, a private school."

So here's some more pics to give a better impression of the site.

I hope these pictures are a lot better than my last offering.

The plan is to knock the building down and build 3 new modern houses. It's a shame really.....

The trip at night was a pain in the arse in general.

Without big expensive flash systems most of the place was too big to get decent photo's of at night.

Glad you went back to redo mate.

Waw fancy seeing a thread about my old school! I'd been meaning to head there and check it out. If you guys are going there again, and if the site isn't destroyed by now, I'm game. The photos taken looks amazing - I hardly recognize the place.
