Choosing what appeared to be the wettest day of the year so far to finally find the time to explore Fletchers did naught to dampen my spirits. After a particularly comedic entrance which resulted in me having to walk around for two hours with a wet bum, I was really pleased that I’d made the effort for the trip, since free time is few and far between for me these days and it was nice to be back in ‘explore mode’.

    Some info..
The Robert Fletcher Mill was a cigarette paper manufacturing complex which occupies a 76 hectare site on the edge of the Peak District National Park. The row of houses at the back of the mill was built to house some of the former workers. The mill was one of two mills run by Robert Fletcher and Sons, the other being the Stoneclough site which closed in 2000. Many jobs were lost, but some 50 workers were offered a lifeline in the prospect of a job at the Greenfield site: -

Unfortunately, the Oldham Mill was to close the following summer and Fletcher’s has now remained empty for 11 years.

Visited with Stranton, thanks for the company and for putting up with me wandering off on my own whenever I found a new doorway/hole in wall/ladder to investigate :D
