    History

Not a huge amount of info about this site, most of the following was gleaned from Wikipedia.

This abandoned office building was formerly administrative offices for GASAG (Berliner Gaswerke Aktiengesellschaft), the main natural gas vendor in Berlin. Built in 1936 next to the river Spree, it fell just on the east side of the Berlin Wall. The site has been abandoned for some time, there have been plans to tear down the building and construct a three-star-plus hotel in its place. These plans go along with the large Spreeport project on the southern banks of the river Spree. According to the citizen's group Mediaspree versenken (Sink the Mediaspree), the construction project was abandoned in the late summer of 2008. New deliberations by the Berlin city-state consequently provide for the construction of two office blocks and a hotel set back 26 to 36 m (85 to 118 ft) from the water, as well as a green space. Because many protests the start of construction is postponed to at least 2014, no progress could be seen when I visited.

    The Explore

This was an impromptu first explore, I stumbled across this building by accident whilst walking to the East Side Gallery. Most of the rooms have been gutted, large parts of the inside of the building weren't particularly interesting, but the view from the roof was impressive. There were around 20 people who had also managed to gain access, a fair bit of graffiti being sprayed etc.

The light wasn't great for internal shots, and I wanted to get to Treptow Park before the sun set, so didn't hang around too long. I didn't have enough time to do Berlin justice, seemed like there were a few sites in the local area, and also some iconic ones across the city, which I would have loved to visit.
