This art-deco cinema was built in 1934. surviving until 1964. It then became a very successful bingo club, until closure at the end of last summer. Standing on a large site in the middle of the town, planning permission was given to replace it with a 15,000 sq. ft. Lidl. Demolition started in May, but the building had the last laugh, as the front wall collapsed into the street, crushing a car and blocking the road and tramtracks!
Permission was granted for photography, a week before closure, so this shows you what it was like inside. Access to the balcony and projection room was refused on heath and safety grounds, in fact the balcony doors were chained and padlocked!
