Fort Amherst is a great museum with lots of old bits to explore by yourself, however, I used to go there a lot (years and years ago now) and thinking of going back. I always used to find some kinds of bullet shells, usually 5.56mm (usually blanks but not always), and I was wondering if anyone else did this too? And if you did, what kind of finds did you used to find there? Thanks

I used to do a fair bit of messing around above Fort Amherst, mainly around the back of the garrison church, plenty to explore but didn't find ant cartridges, many years back when you could wander onto Brompton barracks i used to forage for bullets in the sand of the rifle range and found plenty of 7.62 stuff!!

NIce! Yeah, I bought an ammo tin to keep all the bullets I found in and I'm buying links to make a belt but this is proving a bit difficult. Another cool place to find stuff is this beach halfway between Coalhouse Fort and Tilbury fort. You find anything from bottles (I found a lot of these) to a gold pocket watch and a live frag grenade (I presume from the SS Richard Montgomery)
    .

Anyway, I found shells at Amherst by where the tunnel tours take place. Thanks for a heads up on that garrison I'll go check that out. Thanks mate :)

No worries, its a long long time since I lived in Brompton though, you could access the old moats behind the old naafi or from the tennis courts by the garrison church. Don't know if you still can but if you can get in there is plenty to see.

If you are going to talk about such a trivial matter, at least get the terminology correct. A Bullet or Shell you fire though a barrel. What you are left with is a Cartridge Case, if it was a Blank Cartridge with opened crimped end, or if a fired case which used to contain a bullet, an open end as cartridge in post one.... Not really U.E. is it?

When you fire a bullet the shell from a live one is rounder and hollow. I only find a few of these.
    The crimpled ones are blanks
    So indeed Ordnance is correct.

BTW do you still find stuff at Foulness and Shoebury?
