Ey up people, On a day trip around cumbria I advised we should go to grange over sands lido, we did, However only me and sean could be the only ones with enough energy to climb in.

Its not got too many Points of interest, as the buildings are boarded good and proper. With grange being a place where "old people come to die" there is no vandalism ad added to the whole atmosphere of the place. It was closed in 1992.

I decided to shoot in mono to capture the whole abandonment of the place, Now i will probably get some stick for uploading such a boring place, but it really did hit me when i seen a old photo of how many people actually attended this place. Nice and eerie on a overcast day.

btw what happend to the footbridge near it? has it been saved or are the council gonna demolish it? I remember when I was a very young kid, we would cross it and my dad would lift me up to see the trains go by, then I would go to the outdoor pool for a swim!!

I remember the diving board being a lot higher, but then I was only about 4-5 (its the earliest memory I have btw so it must of been good!! It was PACKED out when we went there when it was open, only if it was the same now:( )

I used to live near grange, and we used to swim here in the early 90's. It was a fantastic pool and should never have been closed. They said the upkeep was too high but it is a common excuse. We would do our school swimming gala there too.

There were originally five diving boards on the structure with arches, The top one was never their when I went it had been removed as the pool was not deep enough. A year or so before it closed the next two highest boards were removed after one of them fell off while it was closed. I remember there was a big crack in the bottom of the pool also as the whole structure was said to be sinking.

There was also a slide, and on certain days they brought out huge inflatables which you could climb all over and jump off.

It was a 50m pool, which was filled with filtered water from the sea at high tide. And it was never heated and was bloody freezing 90% of the time.

Grange spent a lot of time after it closed raising money to either restore the pool or build a new one, with a lottery grant they decided to let the lido rot and built a new pool. The new pool was open for about 2 years from around 2001 onwards before it closed down due to bad management and financial problems, and I believe it is still closed.

I think the money would have been more wisely invested in the lido, which is a fantastic structure. We also used to climb over the wall during the winter months and skateboard on the terraces and on the open structures around the pool such as the viewing platform.

More recently the railway bridge was condemmed, so you cant even get onto that end of the prom now. There also used to be a boating or paddling pool on the side of the prom just by the pool, not sure if it still exists.

Sad to see it like this, but unfortunatley the number of old people in grange these days means there isnt the call for a big pool like that. Especially not a sea water filled unheated pool.
