Morrisey

Underneath the moorland of Rivington lies a labyrinth of disused mines dating back to various periods in time.
The above pits are all within spitting distance of each other so the area must have been a hive of activity in the early part of the century.
Bleachwork mine
Situated on ground to the North of Brownlow above ground evidence still remains in the shape of the stone blocks for the head gear. Also visible is the old shaft that has been backfilled.
The shaft and backfill can actually be seen underground from Brownlow drift where the two intersect each other.
Brownlow drift was driven approx 1800’s and ceased production in the early part of this century. Whilst in operation its coals would have been used to satisfy the needs of the growing industries of Horwich.
The drift comprised of two levels an upper and a lower, these can be seen as they intersect each other throughout the drift.
The height of the drift is about 4’ tall in most places with a few areas that standing upright is possible.
The workings stretch to over a mile towards winter hill and to all other points of the compass.
There is still plenty of evidence to see from its mining past scattered around the various districts. The old tram ways are still in place, the dates of when the pit manager checked the districts, mining tools, charge boxes, tools for exposing gases and tuck cans are left lying around. If you are lucky you can see the preserved markings of the “irons” from somebody’s clogs! These really bring this place to life.
Throughout the workings huge fossils of the trunks of fallen trees can be seen even the bases of the trees can be clearly made out.
Cabin Pit
Lies to the South of Brownlow, the shaft is still clearly visible, looking down to the bottom the workings can be clearly seen. Another day perhaps!!!
