Visited yesterday after seeing a report about it in the local paper, had to wait for a strong southerly wind - otherwise a nasty brown haze drifts up from the sewer!
heres the paper report:

This tunnel is an air vent for the main sewer which runs from Brighton to the Portabello treatment works, its cut straight into the chalk at beach level.
There is a small cavern near the end of the tunnel with a seat cut out of the chalk which seems older than the sewer, there are tales of smugglers in the area and i wondered if this was a hideaway for them which southern water has taken over?

The tunnel is no more than 40metres long, this cave is near the end.
It had tea lights in it and a used bbq!

this shaft goes a short way down into a fast flowing river of sewage - didnt go down (had no gloves and only an FFP1 mask on)
cut marks in the chalk
