after undisclosed location after undisclosed location and reports of not to go down there blah blah blah, and after the best part of 2 days trapesing thru fields, woods, being bitten, stung, falling over and getting drenched..
we came across one of the many concealed entrances to the chaldon/merstham firestone mines!!!

If you contact the Wealden Caving and Mining Society, and they will happily take you down there.

You will probably not get very far without a guide. It really is a maze down there. Its also backbreaking stuff down there. I know they have taken members of this site down there before, myself included. Its a great site and vast.

I know of the location of one entrance - not sure what its like these days though. There used to be an old old car dumped down near the entrance. I once had a couple of pops at it with a shotgun :eek:

I also went to East Surrey, twice. I could see the college from my bedroom. Unfortunately I spent more time in the latter than the former.

I spent about 2 minutes on google, and found 8 figure grid refs for all the entrances. How did it take you two days to find them? When we first started going down them all we had was vague descriptions and it only took a day to find 4 distinct mines.

Sounds like some of the entrances need a 4mtr ladder, which is fine until a local chav steals it and your stuck under a the closed manhole the chav replaced while nicking your ladder, wouldnt want to be stuck there

I live near there you can get a train to whyteleafe or caterham from London only takes 30-40minz can pick you up form either just need the location ;) there are quite a few mines round there visited one a few weeks ago with wife beater.

I think you'll find all entrances to this mine are padlocked, the Wealden cave & Mine Society control access to it.
