Visited with Over

So, dropping over off at home after a weekend of hijinx :p, we called over to pay a visit to the Solicitor drain.

What a lovely little culvert it is too, very old in places, with flowstone all over the place. It's just over half a mile long.

Anyway, here's the pics.

Towards teh end, there's a pipe cover, which we lifted and made our way down. No, i forgot to get a shot of it.

At the end, is a holding tank for shit. (and I'm allowed to say shit here, cos that's exactly what it is)

With a funny sound coming from it, like a very loud bat, but obv not a bat.

I've taken a video of it, or the sound and uploaded it to youtube, any ideas what it is?

Found one of these in Bradford too. I am pretty sure they are simple retention tanks. Normally you get an overflow chamber where the sewers can overflow into a watercourse, but to prevent pollution when there is only a small amount of rain they build tanks which have to fill up before an overflow can occur. What you see there is probably a tank which has filled up and overflowed, but they haven't got round to pumping the contents out back into the sewer system.

Be very careful around these. Stagnant sewage = very high chance of gas. Worrying that it was behind a flap o' doom so there would be no ventilation either.

An empty tank me and DDT found in Leeds. Pipe comes into the top of the 40ft tank with absolutely no warning whatsoever, needless to say it would be quite lethal if you fell, it would be quite easy to do as it's at the end of a 400m 4ft stoop.

Monster tank under construction, sadly rather out of the way for me
