The Country Club, Nethertown 1/12/08

This was a complex of squash courts, gym, swimming pool and restaurant. It took advantage of a large community of contractors and their families when certain parts of Sellafield was being built. With nothing much else to do this was a perfect place to socialise, unwind, enjoy some food and get fit.

Part of the building is currently undergoing conversion into a house. Of the parts of it you see here, some of the roof will be lifted and will be given way to garden.

I spent a lot of time here in the early '80's, a fantastic place :) Latterly a nightclub was built but wasn't popular and didn't last long, then the whole place was closed. The building was a nightmare to heat, incredible inefficiency in the heating systems was obvious, room heating going through concrete tunnels and water pipes unlagged.
