In the hills North of Loch Lomond, at the end of a quiet glen, this mine closed down in 1995 after producing not much gold - it might reopen soon, though.

You've got some nice colours going on there... did you get up the ropes to the top level?

Not on this trip, as I didn't have time to make a day of it - anything interesting up there?

just a really ridiculous climb and a narrow tunnel to a waterfall, it's worth doing though.

Cheers - Rosie wants to have a look at it, so I'll definitely go back and give it a go...

Just out of interest. If they are considering going back to it... is there alot of gold in there?? Just asking theoretically speaking (with a pick axe in hand.)

Probably not an awful lot - and it'll be not lying about in handy lumps. There was quite a bit of fool's gold there too...

Um, no gold whatsoever, actually. The modern adit and raise were driven for prospecting purposes - having a close look at the vein and taking a lot of samples.

Just out of interest. If they are considering going back to it... is there alot of gold in there??

According to the most recent resource statement, there's at least 154,000 ounces of gold and 589,000 ounces of silver in the ground there.

It is currently controlled by an Australian company named Scotgold Resources.

Oh. Very well then. Anyone have a large van and a pick axe I can borrow? lol.

You'd need a very large van! can't remember the exact amount, but in south african gold mines you get something like 1g of unrefined gold is found in 8tonnes of material. So you'll be sivving for a while ;)

OT whats on the upper levels?

I didn't go up to the upper level - ran out of time. Not much up there, apparently...

I would not say there is nothing up there, you come out behind a waterfall and it is beautiful!

Plus the climb itself is very enjoyable...

The upper level is much older - it was part of the 19th century lead mine.
