Our days off coincided so we decided to do something we've been meaning to do for a while: follow the Porter Brook River to wherever it leads. The following photos are in chronological order, which shows just how many times the Porter Brook dips in and out of culverts.

Spotted this guy on our travels, couldn't resist a cheeky snap. Look at those tinnies, is this a businessman who just lost his job, or the most well-dressed tramp ever?

Checking out the odd drain cover.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c221/drumnbach/10-2.jpg

Obligatory.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c221/drumnbach/11-2.jpg

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c221/drumnbach/12-1.jpg

And back out again.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c221/drumnbach/13.jpg

...and back under again.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c221/drumnbach/14-1.jpg

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c221/drumnbach/15-1.jpg

Aww...

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c221/drumnbach/16-1.jpg

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c221/drumnbach/17-1.jpg

We're now heading under Sheffield train station...

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c221/drumnbach/18-1.jpg

If you turn left here everything smells of trains. If you turn right, everything smells of fresh baking. Of course we turned left, turning right would clearly lead us to a trap.

The old man of the drains.

About to enter the world famous Megatron...

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c221/drumnbach/25.jpg

Three hours later and here we are. Well worth the agony.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c221/drumnbach/30.jpg

We weren't about to walk another two miles back, so as soon as we got out in the open we looked for a sneaky way back into the civilised overground. Suddenly, this pipe presented itself to us...

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c221/drumnbach/27.jpg

Most painful climb ever, made worse by the slipperiness of the pipe which made it hard to get a good grip on it. Adrenaline took over though and eventually we got out, but not before being subjected to a good ogling by the general public. We probably did look a bit weird, emerging from beneath a bridge, smelling of sewers.

Vintage day out, would wade again A+++++, though next time will do it with proper waders...

Nice!! Big, innit :)

That pipe has been used for that purpose before :)

Bet your ankles are killing you from all the debris on the floor in there. Proper ruined mine.

My legs absolutely battered by the end of it. It was a just over two mile treck from where we started, which was all wading and debris too.

Pretty funny you've used the pipe too. My mate climbed up it first, so when it was my turn the pipe was all wet and slippery and I was about to give up, but then I thought about having to wade through loads of water again and decided to persevere.

Stacked hand jams behind a greasy pipe. That can't have been easy!

You climb then?

Si.

Nah I don't climb usually, which is why I did myself in so badly. Would love to start doing it though.

Hi,

I love these photos. Would anyone be able to tell me exactly which culvert is where on a map?...to help with a University project I'm doing?.

Thanks

How is it your project if someone else gives you the answers? :p

That being said - I don't know the place - but it took me about 10 seconds (with the help of my good friend Mr Google) to find a Wikipeadia page about the river - complete with a map that names every major road and feature that it passes under

Agreed, its blindingly obvious where this is. It even mentions in the original report that it goes under the station... C'mon you're not even trying! :p

Thankyou. Very helpful.

Any clues as to where any of your underground photos are in relation to a road map was what I meant, ie which culverts are stone / brick / concrete. I know where the Porter goes and have got lots of photos of the bits that aren't culverted.

Thankyou, again.
