View Full Version : General - bedruthan steps mines

Last year when I was down Cornwall I had a look at bedruthan steps beach. I noticed a pair of mine shafts, the lower of the 2 is easily accessed from the beach, the higher one looks to be only accessible with a rope from the cliff above. I had a brief explore and only got about 50m into it (I had the tide coming in and didn't fancy spending the night in the mine). Any of you know about either one of the two shafts? Ive heard they may go inland for 2 miles or more and the rate of water-flow seams to suggest they aren't blocked or collapsed

Also any advice for exploring mines?

cheers

Ive checked the database on Aditnow (http://aditnow.co.uk)
but theres no entry for a mine at Bedruthan steps MAP (http://wtp2.appspot.com/wheresthepath.htm?lat=50.48441857762087&lon=-5.031134974732925&gz=16&oz=8&gt=1)
A quick Google suggests that its an unamed nineteenth century iron mine & the adits dont do very far!
Get yourself down there at low tide telling someone else your location & give us a picture report!
Take a hard hat!!
If its mines your interested in get yourself to North Wales i.e Slate mine (http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=33778)
p.s welcome to the forum:)

cheers

im determined to find out whats in the lower of the 2 at least when im back in the area in a few weeks

the mine is here http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=50.485995&lon=-5.032721&z=15.4&r=0&src=msl

and some buildings that might be the main mine are here http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=50.480324&lon=-5.025621&z=19.6&r=0&src=msl

i according to the locals there are actualy 3 levels to that mine about 50 feet above each other, the upper 2 exiting the cliff the other one lower down.

i'll have a good look around and see how far it goes

cheers

What you have found is the drainage adit of an iron mine called Carnewas.
There are a couple of shafts near the cliff top. The lode was more or less east west.
The only records of output are about 950tons of brown haematite between 1871 and 1874.
The locals will always tell you that tunnels go for miles, its part of the culture !!
The adit will have gone to meet the farthest shaft, probably about 250m and then possibly on a bit further depending how bad the air became, perhaps another 50m but there are no plans. It will have been explored but folks tend to keep the details to themselves.
Make sure you watch the tide, have a hard hat. I'm pretty sure the shafts are sealed so look out for the silent killer of bad air if you get in any distance.
Make sure you let somebody know where you are.
Hope that helps and have fun.

Nothing really worth seeing in there. Crap ground that's run and pretty much "old men's workings" rather than a proper mine.

You need to be much further south to pick up any really extensive adits. There are a couple of bigguns inland, but you need to know where to look. Sadly as my PM's aren't working, I'm not able to offer any information and putting it up publicly would get a number of people excited.

Be careful in Cligga. There are some almighty deep holes and dodgy floors in the top bit. At some point, someone's going to come a cropper in there.

Indeed I found that also. Small ladder shafts linking stopes under shallow puddles giving the wrong impression....
Plenty of slippery clay about too and the feeling that everything in there must only go down

i was a member on mine explorer, and was due to go to cligga with them for a 2nd visit so they could show me round the lower adits etc, i was too hung over to go but they still went (theyre all pretty well experienced compared to me) and just as they were coming out they apparently heard something like it had collapsed in part of it.

Oh right thank you. I went in a few hundred metres only but am looking forward to returning for a good look about. It was also just before the heavy rains and there was a lot of water about

Sounds great am up for a good look. I am not proficient in SRT ropework but think that I would manage the mission and have done a fair bit if climbing etc. I might go and do a session or 2 in one of those indoor places beforehand.
