Visited with OT, Dweeb, Squirrell911 and Turkey.

In 1898 the Palace Theatre opened as a music hall in Union Street, Plymouth. Just eight months after opening and after a particularly pyrotechnically enhanced re-enactment of the battle of Trafalgar it was seriously damaged by fire but re-opened in 1899 as The New Palace Theatre of Varieties.

With the advent of TV, theatre began to fall from grace and despite refurbishment in 1949 it closed in 1954. After another refurbishment in 1956 it was opened again but closed in 1961 when it was converted to a bingo hall until closing in 1983. After that it became the Academy nightclub which then became the Dance Academy in the 90's before being closed down by the rozzers in 2006 for a less than tight drugs policy. The building is Grade II listed.

As well as playing host to all manner of Showbiz royalty, Laurel and Hardy appeared on the stage of the New Palace Theatre on Monday 17th May 1954 with their comedy "Birds of a Feather".

Well I've stood on the same stage as John, Paul, George & Ringo, but I never thought I'd be following in the footsteps of Stan & Ollie!

Awesome building, sad state of affairs, look beyond the flouro paint and this has to be one of the best preserved there is. This can't become another Derby Hippodrome. Please, no.
