I am starting to play with light painting and have a few not too bad trys.
What are your best techniques/tips to create some good shots?
What do you use?
Doesn't seem to be a thread on this so I thought it would be good for all the learners out there.

I use trial and error.
Different torches, different exposures.
See what works best for you.

Searchblaster. With matching sound effects, like a light saber powering up.

i can envisage that, a bit like nightvision goggles, but much deeper and louder.

Look at other peoples pictures, try to work out what light sources they used (waving torches, stationary torches, diffused torches) and where they were placed (Think about shadows aswell as lights). Then plagiarise, simplez.

Do you guys use any particular torches? I realise that you use different lenses/filters on the end. Would roses chocolate wrappers work?
I only have the tesco led torch and another little led torch.

Everyone uses different things, the tesco torch is popular. for the filter -try it (but yes it does) most of the time people dont use filters, but if you want you can get a pack as a free sample, google 'lee filters sample'. seriously get out and practice, or practice at home.

Trial and error ftw :thumb
Sweet wrappers are great. Some art / stationary shops sell coloured acetate in A4 sheets, which can be cut to size.

Yeah just keep trying different stuff, a torch with a wide beam gives good even light for shadows and stuff.

As others have said it's all about trial and error and seeing what works for you .

Go mental. Run around with torches. I've made some myself for this out of various things.
If you're writing anything, remember to do it back to front.
Keep in mind about how much the light "floods".
Stuff like single LED's give very fine lines.
This is a bunch of LED's swung around, and you can pick out each line because its very sharp.

Then you have to see how it reflects off things, illuminates the floor for example in this pic:

(This was with a random torch I had in the car)
A Christmas one:

I havent got any scanned to show and tell, but ive done quite a lot of painting with, mainly recreating byzatine images of the 12 disciples using glowsticks to form a halo around their head....
Playing with rear sync flash and front sync flash can give some really cool effects, and generally I will meter the area as best i can, then set it to the correct aperture, but have the shutter on a 20-30 second exposure.
