Mostyn House School, Parkgate, Wirral.

The school is closing down this year, not sure of the current plans however this place has a old WW2 bunker in the middle of the playing fields.

The old bunker was recently (in the last 2 years) converted into a shooting range (small bore .22 etc) so access is very tight and it would be seriously frowned upon.. If you did still want to go and look down there I could put you in contact with the necessary people but it is no longer original down there.

The school itself looks worth a peep... probably better than a small stripped air raid shelter anyway. There's a few shelters left here and there in Liverpool, I seem to recall seeing a few in planning permission requests.

Am sure you are probably aware but in case you didn't the school closed in July this year.

The "bunker" is an air raid shelter under the playing fields. It has been adapted as a shooting range by a local target shooting club -

http://psa.bizhosting.com/

If you visit their website you'll see some photographs of it as it was, and as it is now.

Most of the artefacts have been preserved and the shelter cleaned and painted in the original colours so with the exception of a wall, some baffles and a backstop, it's as it was originally.

I'll try to get some photographs to post here when I can.
Mike

I'm 25 and an ex pupil. I left before it turned into a shooting range, shooting used to happen upstairs above 'Halt, Hoot, Crawl'

I'd love to get in there and have a look around. I went for a quick look a couple of weeks ago and looks like the main buildings are still being used.

If you'd like to view the air raid shelter, why not contact Phoenix Shooters Association at http://psa.bizhosting.com (http://psa.bizhosting.com)
They operate the range there, and as an ex-pupil I know they'd be happy to let you look round - try contacting them through their website.

The site still has people living there.

I went for a reccy here last night, motion sensored floodlights, alarms etc all seem to be working, along with a car parked up outside one of the buildings with lights on, my guess being live in security. We did however walk the entire perimeter of the building without climbing a single fence, setting off security lights on purpose, with camera and tripod out, to see if we would be bothered, and nobody came out, and we spent a good hour there.

Heres some of the pics I took:

Just an update for this place ..This now has scaffold all up the front by the roadside on the promenade side of the building, I went for an early doors bimble after getting word of the scaffold only to find that there are pensioners residences inside the grounds AND there is also a live in caretaker, the pensioners were at the windows after seeing such a handsome young man dotting around with a camera and there are also cameras covering the carpark and main entrances so it still seems pretty secure and in lovely condition, even the gardens are manicured so it is still loved, all in all it is still one to watch and as a side note the roof can be clearly seen from the caretakers residence which is attached to the building.

There was a car here and washing out on a line so there is deffo a live in caretaker

There is a camera covering the main carpark and frontage it can be seen here, I am sure that this is the caretakers residence due to the washing and christmas lights around the front door.

I got my hopes up when I saw this but it was locked with an access code lock

another access that was securely locked

Good post and pics. The main tower as pictured used to be the music room. You never appreciate these things when you're a spotty school kid. Staircase up to that is spiral around the side of the tower and when I was there it was the boys changing rooms part way up.

The Halt Hoot Crawl entrance pictured leads you down past the where all the school offices were, down towards the dinner hall and another entrance that leads onto the promenade.

I really would love to get in there.

The doorway at the foot of the tower had the plaque entitled "girls changing rooms"
