I know the before/after shots are everywhere - but this website from ABC news in Australia probably presents them in the best way - making it all too obvious just how catastrophic the damage is:

It is very well presented indeed. The news is just so shocking - especially as you say Horus, 10,000 not accounted for.
Its just mental to believe that Japan has suffered so much damage. And its not been that long since the quake in New Zealand.

Though of course weather has nothing to do with earthquakes - like the Boxing Day tsunami, this one is not our fault, it's just blind, horrible chance.

Those pictures really bring home the devastation caused.
My thoughts go out to everyone there.

Finally someone took the time to create that page, been looking for something decent showing the complete devastation.
Human side apart, forget the tragedy and houses, towns & villages. Look at the land, the land is a different shape. Properly biblical sized event.
Would not surprise me if the true death toll is more than 50k within a month, and more over a longer period of time as people realize that old mr.jones from the house at the end of the street is also gone. And whats more, Japan is a 1st world country, THE 1st world country (compared to our sorry little bankrupt rock in the north atlantic) and yet nature makes no odds about it.
