Gartnavel Royal Hospital was built in the early 1840s as the Glasgow Royal Lunatic asylum. In 1931 it became Glasgow Royal Mental Hospital, taking its present name in 1963.
Being considered a model asylum, after the 1857 Lunacy (Scotland) Act was passed, it's design was chosen by the Board of Lunacy as a standard for early District Asylums. Hence it has that "typical Scottish asylum look" of an imposing castellated, almost gothic style façade.
It closed just over 2 years ago, and sits in the grounds of the still VERY active Gartnavel General Hospital. Sometimes referred to as the "old hospital" or "the black building", the place is huge and looms over it's modern counterpart. Well worth a look before it's too late.
