    Post East Germany - 2011

We set out for a 6 day trip to Germany, concentrating on the old DDR sites in the East of the country.

Not wanting to do the 'usual' sites, we opted to do some less well known sites, less 'mainstream' you might say.

Germany has to be treated with some respect when it comes to UE, if you are caught you should expect a fine as it is illegal, or if in my case, you can act out trying to photograph a deer in a live military site and be let off by The German Army!

Apart from the Army and 2 men with mustaches, the only other security we met were the mosquitos, the blood sucking mother *******, I am still recovering now!

    So off we pop.

Our first port of call after a bit of fun on the Autobahn is Expo 2000 in Hannover, A bit like the Millennium Dome, it made a massive loss and is now partially in use and partially derelict. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expo_2000)

Next we visited the Helmstedt-Marienborn Border Checkpoint, the only large East-West checkpoint to be preserved in the country.

For the complete set, please visit my website.

Not far from the checkpoint is a section of the Death Strip, the road that cuts Germany in half, this road was driven every day before the wall came down on the patrol for anyone trying to escape into the west, if they were to attempt it would usually end up in them being shot dead.

The Watch Tower we visited has been dismantled but is still in place, in the middle of the forest.

    The Death Strip Road...

When we got to Berlin the same day, we went to Camp SG, a small Soviet barracks with an airfield, not a large one though.

The next day we went off to Camp 4000, a Nuclear Warhead/Missile storage base, in the middle of the forest (as with most things Soviet Based).

The same day we went on to Camp 4500 (original, I know), a similar base, only this one had the launch site for the nuclear missiles. There were 12 Nuclear Warheads shared between Camp 4000 & Camp 4500. At one point, camp 4500 held over 200 tanks from one of the Soviets tank battalions.

On return we had a quick visit to Templin Airport, no longer in use by the military but as we found out, it was used as a test track and I only got a couple of cheeky shots of the runway before we saw Security and his Alsatian hot footing it towards us...

When we got back, we had an evening visit to Hennigsdorf Watch Tower...

And what it looked like before the wall was demolished...

The next day we visited Air Base WK, another Soviet air base, now being converted into a solar panel farm (there are loads in Germany, England should take a leaf out of their book!)

    The solar panel farm...

After Air Base WK we went to the bombing range, that was where I met the German Army, they weren't very happy, neither were security. All I needed were the police to arrive and I could have topped it off.

The not very interesting bombing range...

The Germany Army leaving me to 'go quickly'...

After that fiasco we went to a place I thought we wouldn't get in, the 5001 bunker (and we didn't) but we did get into the other bunkers which haven't really been reported on much...

    The top buildings...

    Going down...

The next day we went into Berlin to do a bit of touristy stuff and visit Tempelhof Airport, Berlin's new public park/old runway.

Tempelhof Airport is said to be the 3rd largest building in the world, it ceased being an airport in 2008 and eventually ended up being a public park and the building is used partly for businesses, partly to entertain people like me!

This is a small selection of images out of over 60, for the complete set, please visit my website.

    A DC-4 at night...

Yes, a basketball court in an airport! (for the US Army)...

    Tempelhof Bunkers...

Our final day we managed to get The Round House in Berlin done...
