the Reading chalk mines have featured quite heavily recently in the media due to certain areas having caused subsidence and damage to the properties above.
thought it would be a good idea to get down there and see one myself. this particular mine is not itself threatening any buildings itself but there is evidence of earth movement.
access was kindly arranged by Graham Old of the local caving association who holds the keys to the access from the surface. he would be more than happy to show anyone else around if your interested. contact me for details.
access is via a 54 foot fixed steel ladder in a very narrow shaft.. it wasn't quite as bad as i thought and is another part of exploring i've never done before and glad i've conquered my fear of it!
was an interesting explore and much larger down there than i thought.
