In an attempt to gain a foothold into goods traffic from Liverpool's northen docks the C.L.C (Cheshire Lines Committiee) gained an act of parliament to construct an 11 mile branch from Hunts Cross to Sandhills involving tunneling through Liverpool's sandstone ridge. This two mile extension from Walton on the Hill to Huskisson opened on 1st July 1880 five years after work first began. The result was 3 tunnels, Walton Hill tunnel (242yds) followed by a 150 yard cutting. Next Breeze Hill tunnel (646yds) followed by a 70 yard cutting & finally Hawthorne Road tunnel 248 yards.

A pleasant walk & explore although I forgot my tripod & torch. I was stumbeling all over the place in the dark which is probably where my phone fell outta my pocket, never to be seen again!

You can clearly see here that the tunnels are lined with six layers of brickwork.
