Well the history has been covered in other reports, as has the fact this amazing building is due to be demolished.
I was amazed that the cinema closed so recently, but still retained so many original features. It is unusual to see a cinema of this size not carved up to make a "double decker". Instead it is original with circle. This makes the main audatoriom one of the largest rooms I have ever been in, and let me tell you it was a bitch to light paint!!
Behind the screen is still very original, and the fly tower is one of the best I have ever seen.
Orchestra pit is still intact but empty other than a few old chairs.
Dressing rooms are still very intact, some of which still have the steriotypical bulbs around the mirrors. Two had some of the most epic art deco fireplaces in them I have ever seen.
I had so many plans of things I wanted to see, look for and photograph, but the building is SO vast, and such a warren I did little on the list!!
I think a cinema like this with so much of it's originality left really needs to be saved and preserved... But we all know that is not going to happen
Photos, in no real order...
EDIT, does anyone know what film that section of film poser that has been used to mend the door is from? Is "the senator" Napolion Solo from th man from U.N.C.L.E? Answers on a postcard...
