A brief history which I’m sure you already know: Hellingly Hospital, Sussex, was a large mental hospital and was also known as East Sussex County Asylum. It was opened in 1903. Its architect was GT Hine. The majority of the hospital closed in 1994. The section called Ashen Hill (to the east of the site) is still open.

So, what’s left of the place? All of the female wards (to the east of the site) are still intact. Most of the male wards are still there, except for the far western end which has been demolished. The male wards have been stripped far more than the female wards – there’s still a lot of good stuff to see in the female wards but very little left in the male sections. Other than that, all that’s left is the hall and the front admin building (which is badly fire damaged). Nothing in the centre remains – no water tower, no corridors, no laundry etc. From the back of admin all the way over to the hall is a big open building site with diggers and piles of bricks.

I visited on 2 occasions with Catullus. On our first visit we explored all of the female wards, and had to be careful to keep out of site of the workmen who were busy clearing up rubble from where the water tower had been. On our second visit, we explored the hall, male wards and admin. On this second visit there was no-one about at all – no workmen, no security. We were able to stroll from the male wards over to where the water tower had been and look down into the base (it’s full of trash and old furniture), and then walk through the middle of the site to the back of admin where the dentist’s chair is.
