This was the first explore of the day, something to ease my friend into the hobby.
The history was covered by Mr Giggles in January but here it is again:
In 1917 it was briefly used as an aerodrome during WW1.
It re-opened in 1942 as a satellite station to RAF Wing. Shortly after being re-opened it was then transferred to the US air force which flew B-25s and B-24s out.
Then in 1944 a special unit took charge which handled operations like night leaflet drops over occupied europe.
The airfield was shut in 1952 where judging by the condition of alot of the buildings that remained were turned into cattle sheds and such.
Here are my photos:
The remnants of a toilet block:
Big Steel tanks:
Most of the buildings are empty internally or have rubbish dumped in them:
The airstrip:
An air raid shelter just off the air strip, in surprisingly good condition.:
The firing range:
HQ:
This one has obviously been used as a chicken shed at some point:
A toilet block:
What I belive to be the remains of an air raid shelter (The sloped sides of the entrance kind of give it away):
The chimney on the incinerator:
The incinerator building, sadly locked:
Big Iron hut:
Some old generators in the hut:
Theres a lot of low walled random construction in the buildings which is a shame as it ruins the look:
Some rather dodgy roofs!:
Big steel water storage tank/reservoir:
This is still a live site, as proved by this truck:
