I headed out in search of a few of the pill boxes that litter the hills surrounding Buxton, It wasn't long before I found a nice little box between Buxton and Leek and headed off up the hill to take a few snaps.

It wasn't until I stood on top of the box that I noticed what looked like steps leading down, I was right and there was a little air raid shelter. Feeling rather pleased with my self I went for a nosey over the hill and what I found is pictured below.

The area closer to the road looked like farmers were keeping equipment in them, but further away from the road things looked a bit more guarded

It was at this point that 2 Land rovers turned up and the well dressed security guards escorted me from the land and followed me to the main road

These were not Pillboxes but ammunition / bomb stores. The original site was an massive cut and cover bomb depot in the quarry, it was built to the same design at Llanberris in wales but that collapsed due to the amount of quarry waste piled on top so the RAF decided to bin the Harpur Hill depot and replaced it with dozens of small storage bunkers linked by a narrow gauge railway. These bunkers are quite safe as they only held conventional explosive bombs the nasty ones went into Burbage tunnel. Interestingly the main depot never collapsed like Llanberis and outlasted the RAF presence on site to become a cold store for growing Mushrooms, then Christian Salvesen used it as a food store before selling it on to Norbert Dentressangle access is therefore very difficult though there were back door escape tunnels and drainage tunnels during WW2 which may still provide access though 80 years of neglect will make these routes dangerous if you find one.

There are several pill boxes around the site which the first 4 pictures are taken in
